Episode 4: Doug Barnes covers tips on taking better photos of that trophy fish

Listen Now
Our fourth episode. I decided to give some time to some fly fishing photography tips. So many times we make that great catch of the day and you give your fishing buddy your camera to take that perfect shot and later after you are home, and the fish has long forgotten your encounter, you notice that the photo is so dark you can tell how big the fish is.

Douglas Barnes is a professional photographer and full time fly fish angler. He logs hundreds of hours a year on many western rivers, taking some of the most beautiful photos of fly fishing.

In this episode Doug references a few different photos and how he managed to get a good shot. You can see these examples at www.nowpicturethis.com and www.utahonthefly.com

Also, Doug gives some good tips on how to handle the fish while you take its photo. Its important to not let that perfect photo harm the fish.

Fly of the week: Sowbug recipe
Curved caddis hook (Mustad C49S)
Pumpkin colored 1x thread
Light gray frost dubbing
Hen hackle
Mallard flank

Tie in some mallard flank for the tail. Twist a small thin layer of the light gray frost dubbing and wrap 2/3 of the hook. Tie in some hen hackle and make a couple wraps with that and tie it off. Make a couple extra wraps with the thread for the head then whip finish.

Normally a sowbug is fished by bouncing it with a heavy weight on the bottom of the river. Don't be afraid to try fishing it 8-12 inches deep in the fast water too.

I am glad someone is finally casting something for the flyfisherman. Nice work guys.

I just purchased the Optio WP from Pentax. although my wfie has a canon 20D this little Pentax is slim and waterproof!! to 5 ft so it worked great last week on late season summer steelhead here in rainy Oregon. I highly recommend it.
