Episode 5: Norm Albiston returns to talk about the 5 things you can change when fly fishing

Listen Now
We brought back fly fishing expert, Norm Albiston, to finish his thoughts from episode 1 on the 5 things you can change when fly fishing. Norm has a real talent for taking the complicated and technical processes of fly fishing and simplify it down to something that beginners can understand and experienced fly fish anglers need to understand to become even better.

Also in this episode we have expanded the fishing report to include some waters from Oregon and Montana.

The Fly of the Week:
The best fly in my box and the one I go to the most. Mike Overton talks about this essential fly.

WD-40
Size: 18-22
Body: 8/0 thread in Olive, Tan, Brown or Red
Thorax: Hares ear
Wingcase: Optional, but flashback material or a CDC loop wing works well.
Tail: Wood Duck flank fibers

This fly is one of the most flexible patters to fish. It can be fished as a midge or mayfly emerger. It can be fished at any depth in the river from bouncing it on the bottom to floating it in the surface film.

Personally I like to fish the WD-40 about 4 inches deep in choppy, but not too swift of water. Tie some up and go put the hurt on em.

Episode 4: Doug Barnes covers tips on taking better photos of that trophy fish

Listen Now
Our fourth episode. I decided to give some time to some fly fishing photography tips. So many times we make that great catch of the day and you give your fishing buddy your camera to take that perfect shot and later after you are home, and the fish has long forgotten your encounter, you notice that the photo is so dark you can tell how big the fish is.

Douglas Barnes is a professional photographer and full time fly fish angler. He logs hundreds of hours a year on many western rivers, taking some of the most beautiful photos of fly fishing.

In this episode Doug references a few different photos and how he managed to get a good shot. You can see these examples at www.nowpicturethis.com and www.utahonthefly.com

Also, Doug gives some good tips on how to handle the fish while you take its photo. Its important to not let that perfect photo harm the fish.

Fly of the week: Sowbug recipe
Curved caddis hook (Mustad C49S)
Pumpkin colored 1x thread
Light gray frost dubbing
Hen hackle
Mallard flank

Tie in some mallard flank for the tail. Twist a small thin layer of the light gray frost dubbing and wrap 2/3 of the hook. Tie in some hen hackle and make a couple wraps with that and tie it off. Make a couple extra wraps with the thread for the head then whip finish.

Normally a sowbug is fished by bouncing it with a heavy weight on the bottom of the river. Don't be afraid to try fishing it 8-12 inches deep in the fast water too.
