Eastern Idaho Fly Tying Convention

Just a quick note between podcast episodes. We are spending the weekend at the Eastern Idaho Fly Tying Convention. It's been a fantastic day. On the drive up from Salt Lake we stoped at a spring creek in Idaho and hooked these lunkers! We were so pumped about these fish we had to post this right away.

So far the tiers we have talked to have been really helpful. I learned something from every tier that we sat down to watch. Looking forward to more tying tomorrow.

Episode 17: Dave Whitlock and the 2nd half of Fly Fishing

Listen Now
Fly Fisher, Fly Tier, Artist, Author, Teacher, Dave Whitlock takes a moment to visit with us about his career in Fly Fishing. His recent move back to Oklahoma is what he calls the 2nd half of his career. He is managing some of the waters in the area and working on a new book. He is no longer doing his fly fishing school, Dave is still taking on a few private lessons for select clients.
Dave talks about the second half of fly fishing and relates a great story of one of his students who reluctantly tied a couple flies. Only after loosing all of them in the lips of some large trout was he totally hooked on the other half of fly fishing.
Most people know Dave for his fly patterns but, fewer people know about his conservation efforts in further developing a in-stream incubation box for trout eggs.
Truly an inspiring individual, its an honor to have him on our show.

Episode 16: Lefty Kreh talks to us about the 4 principles of casting and more.

Listen Now
Another huge "get" for Fly Fish Radio. We have Lefty Kreh on the show and while we had him we covered a wide range of topics. But, since it is Lefty we had to talk about casting and how to be a better casting instructor. Lefty has fished all over the world and shares some of his favorite places to visit. And we take a minute to talk about fly tying. Over all, a great conversation and most of all a great fly fish master to listen to. Well worth the download.

Another great thing about this episode is that we have Fishwest.com as a sponsor. They have generously donated a pair of the new William Joseph waders to the show. We want to pass that offer to our listeners and let you have a chance to win this great new pair of waders. Register with the site and you will be automatically entered to the drawing.

Follow up to Episode 15

No podcast for this post but wanted to make a quick post about the US Fly Fishing Team Trials this past weekend. From the perspective of a newb to the competitive side of the sport we all love I was inspired. It was so great to watch this "new" (new to me) Czech technique in action. They did make it look easy. Later, Mike and I went downstream and I had to try it. After 1 hour I managed to hook up one fish. I then deffered to the streamer and got my fix I was looking for.

Mike and I spent the morning on the Provo River beat. I learned alot watching Brian Capsey from Durango Colorado.

I followed him for a couple of hours along his beat and watched him catch 12 fish. One of them was this awesome 22" brown.

The way that the points work in these competitions is that quantity is worth more than quality of fish. You get x number of points for each fish you land plus y number of points for every inch. So, two 8" fish are worth more in points than 1 16" fish. Plus since you have only 3 hours to fish the beat, you dont want to waste a second that you dont have to. Rather than play the fish out competitors want to net the fish as soon as possible. In Brians case, it often meant getting in the deep and fast water. And in one case, litteraly in the water.

Mike and I had a chance to interview a few of the competitors after that first beat. Look for that podcast soon.

Later this week we will have Lefty Kreh so stay tuned.
